How to Have Clean, White Teeth

Steps

  1. Get a large piece of dental floss and floss in between your teeth. Don’t be too forceful or you could make your gums bleed, Move the floss in a C shape around each tooth.
  2. Rinse your toothbrush under cold water and put on a pea sized amount of toothpaste. If you are aiming for white teeth, use a whitening toothpaste.
  3. Start brushing gently. Make sure you clean all your teeth, especially the ones at the back. Brush the sides and backs of each tooth and then gently brush the gums.
  4. Brush the roof of your mouth and your tongue, and then rinse your mouth out with water, rinse your toothbrush in warm water and proceed to brush again gently without additional toothpaste. Then, rinse your toothbrush well and store it upright.
  5. Rinse your mouth with some good mouthwash, preferably an antiseptic mouthwash like Listerine. Gargle the mouthwash before you spit it out for about 30 seconds and you will have clean teeth and fresh breath!

Tips

  • If aiming for whiter teeth, use a whitening toothpaste, floss, rinse with mouthwash, and use a whitening gel tray or strip. Keep in mind overuse of a whitening gel can irritate the gums. And avoid dark caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea and soda as they can stain teeth.
  • If you still have a problem with bad breath, try cutting out foods such as garlic and onions, and stop smoking if you do . If your breath is still bad, see your doctor.
  • Visit your dentist twice a year to make sure your teeth are in good condition.
  • You should brush your teeth for around 3 minutes. If you are having trouble knowing when that time is up, use a timer.
  • You should use a toothbrush with soft bristles so that your teeth don’t get damaged.
  • Have a good diet. Don’t eat too much sugar and drink lots of water.
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 months.
  • Baking soda is used to clean teeth too.

Warnings

  • If your toothbrush is too hard or you are brushing too rough, it could wear down your teeth. Remember that your toothbrush should have soft bristles and you should brush gently.
  • Don’t share your toothbrush with other people, as this can spread germs.
  • If you notice your gums bleeding, you may be brushing too rough. Bleeding gums is a possible sign of gingivitis. You should brush more, but if the gums continue to bleed, see a doctor.

  • Well bristled toothbrush

Asthma 101

Asthma Information
Asthma is characterized by coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and wheezing. Asthma symptoms can be triggered by several factors, including: allergens or irritants; viral or sinus infections; exercise; reflux disease (stomach acid flowing back up the esophagus); medications or foods; and emotional anxiety.

Caffeine and Asthma
If you feel an asthma attack coming on and don’t have your inhaler handy, try a couple cups of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or chocolate bars. The caffeine will help open your airways.

Controlling Your Asthma
If you find yourself using your quick-relief inhaler to stop an asthma attack more than twice a week, it may be time for a different medication. In fact, if you have to refill your inhaler more than two times a year or are awakened by asthma symptoms two nights or more per week, you also probably need a change.

Correct Inhaler Use
If you use an inhaler to treat your asthma, remember that it’s not a breath freshener. You must deeply inhale the medication into your lungs and hold it for three to five seconds before exhaling slowly.

NSAIDs, Aspirin and Asthma
Asthma sufferers should use the non-aspirin pain reliever acetaminophen (Tylenol) because the use of aspirin and NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), such as Advil/Motrin (ibuprofen) and Aleve (naproxen sodium), have the tendency to worsen asthma.

Teeth Bleaching: Easier than You Think

Safe ways to whiten the teeth are now available in most dentists’ offices. We hear from Dr. Donald Carmona, DDS, past President of Florida Dental Society, that it usually requires just one initial visit to check teeth discoloration and make molds of the teeth and one follow-up visit in about four to six weeks. During that time, the patient applies the whitening paste to the plastic mold that fits around the teeth and keeps it in for 30 minutes each morning and each evening. It’s painless and easy. Yellowed teeth get better results than teeth stained by medication. Costs vary but range between $500 and $1500.

Healthy Diet

Excess body fat leads to health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Health professionals use a measurement called body mass index (BMI) to classify an adult’s weight as healthy, overweight, or obese. BMI describes body weight relative to height and is correlated with total body fat content in most adults.

To find your BMI, use the chart on this page or
National Heart Lung and Blood Institute’s BMI calculator.

BMI range:

  • 18.5-25 — healthy range
  • 25-30 - overweight
  • 30 or higher — obese

Having excess abdominal body fat is also a health risk. Men with a waist of more than 40 inches around and women with a waist of 35 inches or more are at risk for health problems.

More than 60 percent of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While the number of overweight people has been slowly climbing since the 1980s, the number of obese adults has nearly doubled since then.

Excess weight and physical inactivity account for more than 300,000 premature deaths each year in the United States, second only to deaths related to smoking, says the CDC. People who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, gallbladder disease and joint pain caused by excess uric acid (gout). Excess weight can also cause interrupted breathing during sleep (sleep apnea) and wearing away of the joints (osteoarthritis).

To lose weight, you must eat less and move more. Your body needs to burn more calories than you take in.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans show how good dietary habits can promote health and reduce risk for major chronic diseases.

A heart-healthy diet is one that is:

  • nutritious and well-balanced
  • low in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and salt
  • high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains

The Food Guide Pyramid and the Food Label are tools to help consumers make informed food choices in the context of a healthy diet.

Use the Food Guide Pyramid to help you choose healthy foods each day.

Use the Food Label Nutrition Facts Panel on the food products you buy for guidance. In general, try to plan your daily food choices so that you eat

  • less than 100% of the Daily Value (DV) for total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium.
  • at least 100% of the Daily Value (DV) for fiber, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and iron.
